April 2027 on the Gulf Coast: The Sharks Tooth Festival, Film Festival, and Spring in Sarasota and Venice
April is the Gulf Coast's grand finale of season: the weather is still perfect, the beaches are at their best, and two of the area's biggest events of the year anchor the calendar. The Venice Sharks Tooth Festival returns April 10-11, and the Sarasota Film Festival runs April 9-18, with farmers markets and open-air concerts filling every weekend in between. Here is my guide to making the most of April 2027 in Sarasota and Venice.
The Venice Sharks Tooth Festival: April 10-11
If you visit Venice for one weekend in the spring, make it the Sharks Tooth Festival. Back at Centennial Park in historic downtown Venice on April 10-11, the festival celebrates the city's title as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, with live music on two stages, fossil and shark tooth vendors, food trucks, and a kids corner that keeps little ones busy for hours. Admission is free, hours run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and the whole event is hosted by Venice MainStreet right in the walkable heart of town. Families love it because there is genuinely something for every age: kids hunt for prehistoric teeth on the beaches, parents browse the vendors along West Venice Avenue, and everyone ends the day on the grass by the gazebo.
The festival also happens to be a wonderful reason to see what living in Venice feels like. The Mediterranean Revival storefronts, the Wednesday farmers market tradition, the short drive to the beach, and the friendly pace of the historic district are all on display that weekend. For buyers considering Venice, it is the perfect "try before you buy" outing.
The Sarasota Film Festival: April 9-18
Across Sarasota, the 29th annual Sarasota Film Festival runs April 9-18, screening independent films, documentaries, and shorts at venues throughout the city. It is a festival with real cultural weight, and it fills the late-season calendar with premieres, panel discussions, and filmmaker Q&As that you will not find anywhere else on the Gulf Coast. Whether you catch a one-off documentary or plan a full weekend of screenings, the festival is a reminder of how much creative energy Sarasota carries into spring.
Farmers Markets and Spring Saturdays
Spring is market season, and the markets here are worth planning a morning around. The Sarasota Farmers Market fills Lemon Avenue every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. with produce, flowers, baked goods, and live music. The Central Sarasota Farmers Market runs Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Siesta Key's farmers market sets up Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Ocean Boulevard. In Venice, the historic downtown farmers market is a year-round tradition that feels like a neighborhood block party. For prospective buyers, a market morning is an honest window into everyday Gulf Coast life, and it is free to wander.
Concerts and Evenings Out
As the evenings stretch longer, the music calendar fills up. Sundays at The Bay brings free concerts to the waterfront park on Sarasota Bay, and the Art Walk on Palm Avenue turns downtown into an open-air gallery on the first Friday of each month. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is in full bloom with spring exhibitions, and downtown Venice's Wine Walk, the popular evening sip-and-shop that Venice MainStreet runs through the historic district, returns each spring (the 2026 edition ran late April, so watch the city calendar for the 2027 date). It is one of those grown-up nights out that makes downtown Venice feel like a real destination.
Why April Is a Smart Month to Look
For out-of-state buyers, April is one of the smartest months to visit. The snowbird season is winding down, but the weather is still in the low 80s, the water is warm, and the beaches are stunning before summer's heat arrives. It is also the window when you can feel the full rhythm of the area: schools in session, golf courses busy, restaurants humming, and the community calendar at its richest. A spring scouting trip that lands on the Sharks Tooth weekend lets you see Venice at its liveliest, then follow it with showings the same weekend.
Let's Plan Your Spring Visit
Whether you are visiting for the festival weekend or coming specifically to look at homes, I would love to help you put the trip together. Tell me what you are hoping to find, and I will line up the neighborhoods, the showings, and the right dinner tables to go with them. Thanks so much, and warmly, Julie.
