December 2026 on the Gulf Coast: Holiday Boat Parades and Light Displays in Sarasota and Venice
December is when the Gulf Coast does its holidays differently: instead of sleigh rides and snow, we get boat parades on the bay and millions of lights wrapped around the palms. The month is packed with traditions families and transplanted residents look forward to all year, from the Venice Christmas Boat Parade to the tree lighting on St. Armands Circle. Here is my guide to the December 2026 events in Sarasota and Venice worth putting on your calendar.
Venice Christmas Boat Parade: The First Saturday of December
The Venice Christmas Boat Parade has been a city tradition since 1989, and it is exactly the kind of small-town magic that makes this corner of the coast special. Boats of every size decorate themselves in lights and cruise the Intracoastal Waterway, starting just north of the Albee Road Bridge and heading south past Snake Island, under the Venice Avenue bridge, and down toward the jetties. It starts around 6 p.m., it is free to watch, and the organizers mean it when they say no boat is too small. The best viewing spots are along the seawalls and bridges of the route, so arrive early, bring chairs and a jacket, and make an evening of it.
Sarasota Holiday Boat Parade of Lights on the Bay
A couple of weeks later, Sarasota takes its turn. The long-running Holiday Boat Parade of Lights on Sarasota Bay is presented in partnership with Marina Jack and benefits local children's charities, with decorated boats circling the bay as spectators gather along the downtown waterfront. The classic viewing spots are Bayfront Park and the island park across the water, where you can watch the lights glide past the skyline. It is a gorgeous, distinctly Sarasota way to spend a December evening, and it is free, so bring the whole family.
Lights in Bloom at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
If you see only one light display this season, make it Lights in Bloom. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens on the Sarasota bayfront strings more than two million lights across its 15 acres, and the result has been named one of the country's top botanical garden holiday displays by USA TODAY. Winding paths, glowing trees, and the bayfront setting make it a walk you will want to take slowly. It runs from early December into early January, and because it is hugely popular, tickets are sold in advance through selby.org. Book early, especially for the first weekend.
Holiday Night of Lights on St. Armands Circle
St. Armands Circle kicks off its season with the Holiday Night of Lights in early December, and it is the most festive evening of the year on the Circle. There is a carol sing-along, a Santa parade through the shops, and the lighting of the Circle's 60-foot Christmas tree, which stays lit all season. Combine it with dinner at one of the Circle's restaurants, like Café L'Europe for an elegant table or a casual spot for the kids, and you have a complete holiday evening. The Circle at night, strung in lights, is one of those scenes that makes people decide to move here.
Downtown Sarasota Holiday Parade
The Downtown Sarasota Holiday Parade marches down Main Street on an early December evening, with bands, floats, and local organizations filling the street in front of the historic buildings. It is the city's biggest holiday procession, and because downtown has become so walkable, you can park once and spend the whole evening at the parade, dinner, and the bayfront. Neighborhoods like Laurel Park and the historic streets behind Main Street are a short walk from the action, which is one more reason downtown living keeps growing.
Venice Christmas Walk and the Historic Downtown
Venice's historic downtown stays busy all month. The Venice Christmas Walk, held early in December, brings extended shop hours, live music, and decorated trees along Miami, Tampa, and West Venice avenues, with the Mediterranean Revival architecture of the district glowing under the lights. Between the holiday parade (the Saturday after Thanksgiving), the Mayor's Hometown Christmas tree lighting, and the Christmas Walk, downtown Venice feels like a storybook all season. It is also a wonderful reminder that small-town charm and luxury living coexist beautifully on this coast.
Settle In Before the Season Peaks
December is also when I tell out-of-state buyers to visit if they can. You see the community at its most joyful, you meet the neighbors, and you get a true feel for how the area lives through the holidays. And neighborhoods near the waterfront and downtown put you walking distance from these traditions every year. If you are thinking about making that move, I would love to show you around during the most wonderful time of the year on the Gulf Coast. Send me a note, and let us find the home that puts you at the center of it all.
