Halloween on the Gulf Coast: Family-Friendly Fun in Sarasota and Venice

October on the Gulf Coast is one of the great parenting secrets in Florida: the heat breaks, the beaches quiet down, and the community calendar fills with pumpkin patches, costume parades, and festivals that feel genuinely small-town. If you are raising a family here, or deciding where you want to, these are the events that turn a new neighborhood into home. Here is my guide to family-friendly Halloween and fall fun in Sarasota, Venice, and Nokomis.

Pumpkin Patches and Harvest Festivals

Fruitville Grove Pumpkin Festival

The Fruitville Grove Pumpkin Festival at 7410 Fruitville Road is the long-running classic, now in its 37th year and running every Saturday and Sunday in October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free with $5 parking. You get the full harvest experience: pumpkin patch, hayrides, pony rides, a petting zoo, live music, the Torres Family Circus, and costume contests. For braver kids around age 8 and up, the Haunted Manor adds a thrill on the way out. One visit and you will understand why families mark the calendar for it every year.

Hunsader Farms Pumpkin Festival

Just across the county line in east Manatee, Hunsader Farms runs its festival on October weekends with hayrides, pony rides, a Pioneer Trades Village, a craft show, live music, scarecrows, and a giant pumpkin patch. Tickets run around $15 for adults and $5 for kids ages 5 to 9, with younger children free. It is a little farther out, but the farm experience is worth the drive.

Not-So-Spooky Evenings

Boo! at The Bay

The Bay Park at 1055 Boulevard of the Arts hosts a free, not-so-scary evening of trick-or-treating, free pumpkin picking, yard games, and a family movie on the lawn. No frights, just costumes and candy on one of the nicest waterfront settings in downtown Sarasota. It is the perfect first Halloween event for little ones.

Sarasota Fall Carnival at University Town Center

Around the end of October, the parking lot at the Mall at University Town Center becomes a carnival with rides, a pumpkin patch, trunk-or-treat, a pet costume contest, and market vendors. It runs into early November, so it is a great option if you miss a festival weekend.

Halloween at the Meadows Farmers Market

The farmers market at 5041 Ringwood Meadow goes festive mid-month with trick-or-treating among the vendors, costume fun, and the usual excellent local produce and baked goods. Free to attend, and an easy morning out.

Venice and Nokomis Traditions

Sun Fiesta

Venice's biggest fall tradition fills Centennial Park in historic downtown Venice for a long October weekend: live music, arts and crafts vendors, the famous bed races, a Kid's Korner, the Miss Sun Fiesta pageant, and food tents, all free to attend. The park is surrounded by the downtown's Mediterranean Revival architecture, which makes it one of the prettiest festival settings anywhere.

Downtown Venice Halloween Strut

On Halloween afternoon, downtown Venice merchants host the Halloween Strut from about 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: trunk-or-treat, a kid-friendly DJ, and costumes all around. It is compact, safe, and exactly the kind of tradition that makes downtown living so appealing to families.

Wellen Park Spooktacular

Down in Wellen Park, Downtown Wellen hosts the Spooktacular on Friday, October 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. with trick-or-treating through the shops, live music, costumes, and a dog costume contest. It is one of the best arguments I know for buying new construction in Wellen Park: the community calendar is already built in.

Haunted Trails at Oscar Scherer State Park

In Osprey, midway between Sarasota and Venice, Oscar Scherer State Park runs a family-friendly haunted trail event in mid-to-late October. The trails are spooky but not terrifying, and it is a lovely fall evening under the oaks. Confirmed dates shift each year, so check the park's event page before you go.

Why This Matters When You Buy

I have lived this market for 24 years, and I tell every family buyer the same thing: visit the neighborhood you are considering during its community season. See where the kids ride bikes, which streets light up on Halloween, and whether the block gather happens at a park, a clubhouse, or a cul-de-sac. The best neighborhoods in Sarasota, Venice, and Nokomis are the ones where October feels like a party, and that sense of belonging is something you cannot see in a listing photo.

Dates set by organizers change slightly from year to year, so confirm on the official event pages before heading out. And if your family is looking to make the Gulf Coast home, I would love to help you find the neighborhood where your kids will make these memories. Send me a note or give me a call, and we will start the conversation.
