Labor Day weekend on the Gulf Coast is something special. 17th Annual Labor Day Weekend Venice Craft Festival

Historic downtown Venice is one of my favorite places in all of Sarasota County, and the Venice Craft Festival brings out everything I love about this community. Running Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6 from 10 AM to 4 PM, the festival takes over Miami Avenue West with over 60 artisan vendors selling ceramics, jewelry, stained glass, metalwork, photography, and more.

There is also a Green Market with fresh produce and plants, and the Mediterranean Revival architecture of downtown Venice provides a beautiful backdrop for a leisurely weekend stroll. Parking is available in the public lots near City Hall, and the festival is free to enter. After browsing the vendors, I recommend walking the few blocks downtown to one of Venice's excellent local restaurants for lunch.

The jetty at the north end is a wonderful spot for watching boats pass through the channel, and the sunset views are spectacular. The area around the Venice Fishing Pier is one of the best spots in the world to find prehistoric shark teeth, and Labor Day weekend — with the lower crowds and the receding tide — is an ideal time to try your luck. And for a more casual evening, Pop's Sunset Grill on the Intracoastal in Nokomis is one of the most genuine Gulf Coast dining experiences you can have — the grouper sandwich and key lime pie are as good as everyone says they are.

Fishing charters depart daily from the City Marina of Venice, Marina at Bayfront Park, and private marinas throughout the area.
