New Year's Eve and January 2027 on the Gulf Coast: How Sarasota and Venice Ring In the Year
The new year is about to arrive on the Gulf Coast, and Sarasota and Venice know how to celebrate. From the downtown Pineapple Drop in Sarasota to beachfront bashes in Venice, here is my guide to New Year's Eve 2026 and the January events that follow. And if you are in town for the celebrations, this is also the best time of year to see what Gulf Coast living is really like.
Sarasota: The Pineapple Drop and Fireworks Over the Bay
Sarasota's signature way to welcome the new year is the Downtown Sarasota New Year's Eve Pineapple Drop and block party around Main Street and Lemon Avenue. Expect live music, a midnight illuminated pineapple drop, and fireworks over Sarasota Bay, all in a festive, family-friendly setting. Dreamland Amusements typically sets up its Pineapple Drop Carnival at Five Points Park as part of the celebration, with past editions running December 30 through 31 from early afternoon past midnight, so there is something for every age.
If you want a more elegant evening, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens hosts its New Year's Eve Gala at the downtown campus, a long-running celebration of dinner, music, and the countdown surrounded by gardens. And my practical advice for anyone celebrating downtown: book your table ahead. The best restaurants fill up weeks in advance, so reserve early at your favorite spot on Main Street or St. Armands, then walk to the drop.
Venice: Beach Bash and a Mango Drop
Venice does New Year's Eve with toes in the sand. Sharky's on the Pier hosts its annual New Year's Eve Beach Bash at 1600 Harbor Drive South, with live music right on the beach and a spot-on view of the midnight sky. It sells out most years, so grab tickets as soon as they are announced. On the shore of Casey Key, Sunny Jim's throws its beloved Mango Drop celebration, complete with dinner, dancing, and a tropical twist on the traditional countdown.
For families, my favorite way to celebrate is the earlier kind: an afternoon at Venice Beach, shark-tooth hunting at Caspersen, an early dinner in historic downtown Venice, and candles at home before midnight. Kids stay up for a while, everyone is happy, and the real party is yours to design.
January 2027: The Gulf Coast Calendar Kicks Off
The celebrations do not stop after the countdown. January brings a full calendar:
- The Sarasota Seafood & Music Festival runs January 8 through 10 at the Sarasota Fairgrounds on Ringling Boulevard, a family favorite for fresh seafood, live music, and local vendors.
- The Great Mr. Swindle's Traveling Peculiarium brings its curious traveling attractions to the area from January 8 through 17, a fun stop for visitors of all ages.
- Sarasota Opera's winter festival programming fills downtown evenings with world-class voices, a perfect elegant night out.
- The Manatee County Fair, a short drive north, is the classic January fair experience with exhibits, rides, and fair food.
- In Venice, the 19th Annual Downtown Venice Craft Festival takes over West Venice Avenue on January 30 and 31 with free admission and artists from across the country.
- The Venice Museum's "Venice Turns 100" centennial exhibit is on view through January 20, a lovely way to understand the charm of this historic coast city.
- The Venice Performing Arts Center kicks off the month with Live and Let Die: The Music of Paul McCartney on January 3 and a tribute to Alan Jackson on January 16.
- And every Saturday, the Venice Farmers Market lines the downtown with produce, flowers, and local makers, the perfect weekend ritual.
Why January Is a Smart Month to Visit Before You Buy
Every year, some of my out-of-state buyers come for the holidays and stay to look. January is the heart of season, so you see Sarasota, Nokomis, and Venice exactly as they live at their busiest and best. If you are coming for the celebrations anyway, spend a day looking at neighborhoods while you are here, from waterfront estates on Manasota Key to Palmer Ranch and the corridors West of Trail. It is the most efficient way to decide where your new chapter should begin.
