A Perfect Weekend on the Gulf Coast: Where to Play, Dine, and Relax in Sarasota and Venice

One of the questions I hear most often from buyers considering a move to Southwest Florida is this: what is there actually to do on the weekends? The short answer is a lot. The longer answer is that the Sarasota-Venice corridor offers such a rich mix of experiences that you could spend years exploring and still find something new every weekend. Here is how I would plan a perfect weekend on the Gulf Coast — the kind that makes you want to stay forever.

Friday Evening: Arrive and Unwind

Sunset at Marina Jack. There is no better way to begin a Gulf Coast weekend than with a sunset over Sarasota Bay. Marina Jack's waterfront dining on the downtown Sarasota bayfront offers two experiences in one: the upstairs dining room for a more refined meal, or the dockside patio for a relaxed drink with your feet practically in the water. Order the grouper or the seafood tower, watch the boats glide past, and let the schedule of wherever you came from start to fall away. It takes about one sunset here to understand why people relocate from colder climates and never look back.

After dinner, take a slow walk through Bayfront Park. The lights of the Sarasota skyline reflect on the bay, and the playground — if you have kids with you — stays open late. It is the kind of Friday evening that sets a relaxed tone for the whole weekend.

Saturday Morning: Siesta Key or Nokomis Beach

Siesta Key Beach was named the best beach in the United States for 2026, and it earns that title every single day. The quartz-crystal sand stays cool underfoot even in July, the water is calm and clear, and the beach is wide enough that you can always find your own space. Arrive early — before 9 AM — to secure parking at the main lot on Beach Road, then claim your spot and settle in for a few hours of the purest relaxation the Gulf Coast offers.

If you prefer a quieter, more local scene, Nokomis Beach is my personal favorite. It has the same turquoise water and sugar sand, but the atmosphere is more relaxed and the crowd skews heavily toward locals. The jetty at the north end is a great spot to watch boats coming through the pass, and on Saturday evenings the drum circle at sunset is a tradition that has been going strong for decades.

Saturday Afternoon: Lunch and Exploring

From Siesta Key, head to Siesta Key Village for lunch. The Old Salty Dog is the island's iconic waterfront bar and grill — cold drinks, fried seafood, and a deck that faces the bay. It gets busy during season, but the energy is part of the experience. If you want something more refined, The Cottage offers elevated coastal cuisine in a garden setting that feels a world away from the beach crowds.

In Venice, spend the afternoon exploring Historic Downtown Venice. The Mediterranean Revival architecture gives the downtown a distinct character — independent boutiques, art galleries, and local restaurants line the main streets. The Venice Farmers' Market runs on Saturday mornings and is one of the best in the region, with fresh produce, baked goods, and local artisans. Walk the grounds of the Venice Theatre, one of the largest community theatres in the country, and check their schedule for evening performances.

Saturday Evening: Waterfront Dining and Nightlife

For sunset dinner, you have two exceptional options depending on your mood. Pattigeorge's on Longboat Key offers fine dining on the water with sunset views that rival anything on the Gulf Coast. The seafood is Gulf-to-table, and the atmosphere is elegant enough for a special evening but welcoming enough for a relaxed dinner.

For a more vibrant scene, St. Armands Circle on Lido Key is the place to be. Start with cocktails at Shore Restaurant, then wander the Circle for post-dinner gelato at Big Olaf's Creamery or a walk through the galleries. The Circle stays lively well into the evening, and the pedestrian-friendly layout makes it easy to hop from one spot to the next.

Sunday Morning: Culture and Brunch

Start Sunday with a visit to The Ringling Museum — the former estate of circus magnate John Ringling, now one of Florida's premier cultural institutions. The art museum houses a world-class collection of Baroque paintings, the Ca' d'Zan mansion is a stunning Venetian Gothic waterfront estate, and the Circus Museum delights visitors of all ages. The grounds are spectacular, with bayfront gardens that are worth the visit alone.

For brunch, Libby's Neighborhood Brasserie in Southside Village is a reliable favorite. The menu is classically American brasserie with a Florida twist — eggs Benedict, crab cakes, fresh salads, and excellent coffee. The patio is one of the most pleasant dining spots in Sarasota, shaded by mature oaks and cooled by bay breezes.

Sunday Afternoon: Nature and Outdoor Adventure

Before you head home, spend the afternoon outdoors. South Lido County Park offers a kayak launch through mangrove tunnels where you can spot herons, manatees, and dolphins. Rent a kayak or paddleboard from the vendors nearby and spend an hour exploring the calm bay waters.

If you prefer to stay on land, the Legacy Trail stretches nearly 13 miles from Sarasota to Venice, winding through preserves and scenic corridors. Rent bikes from one of the many rental shops near the trailheads and take a leisurely ride. The section through Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey is especially beautiful, with the trail threading through a canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

The thing about a weekend on the Gulf Coast is that you never feel rushed. The pace here is different.
