Snook Haven Is Coming Back: Old Florida Returns to the Myakka River

One of the most beloved pieces of old Florida near Venice is coming back. Snook Haven, the historic riverfront restaurant and canoe launch on the Myakka River, is expected to reopen in early November 2026 after a nearly year-long renovation by Sarasota County. For locals and for anyone considering a move to the Venice and Nokomis area, it is worth knowing why this riverfront spot matters: there is nothing else quite like it left on the Gulf Coast.

A Landmark With Deep Roots

Snook Haven's story begins as a fish camp on the banks of the Myakka, with some accounts tracing the site back to the Prohibition era and even to old movie shoots on the river in the 1930s. The sit-down restaurant building went up in 1958, and for decades "Smack Dab on the Myakka River" was the phrase that brought people in: cold beer, house-smoked barbecue, the famous house-made kielbasa, and live music drifting over the water. Visitors could rent a canoe, hop an airboat tour, or just sit on the deck and watch the river roll by.

Sarasota County bought the property in 2006 and turned it into a county park with public river access, keeping the restaurant and launch running under a longtime local operator. It became the kind of place newcomers discover on their second visit and then never stop telling people about.

The Myakka: One of Florida's Wild Rivers

The setting is the real star. The Myakka is one of only two federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in the state, which means its banks stay undeveloped and wild: cypress, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, herons working the shallows, and alligators sunning on the mud. Paddle upstream from Snook Haven and you are in the same river the old-timers floated, with the sound of engines replaced by birdsong and the slap of paddles.

That wild river character is a genuine asset for the neighborhoods around it. A house near the Myakka or the preserves that line it offers something the beachfront doesn't: deep shade, wildlife, and a quiet that feels a world away, all within minutes of Venice's downtown and the Gulf beaches.

What's New in the Renovation

The project is a major one, about $8.75 million for the 2.5-acre park. The original restaurant building, which had taken on water when the river flooded, is being replaced by a new ADA-compliant food concession building and an open-air, covered dining pavilion with river views, designed by Sweet Sparkman Architects. There is also a new ADA-compliant bandshell for the live-music tradition and repaired piers along the water. The goal was to keep the old Florida feel while making the whole park more welcoming, and the early renderings suggest they managed it.

After a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the public opening is expected around the first week of November 2026, pending final certifications, so this is very much a "coming soon" story for the Venice and Nokomis area.

Why It Matters for Buyers

For people weighing a move to South Sarasota County, Snook Haven is part of the answer to a fair question: is there a real community here, or just subdivisions and strip malls? Places like this, the Saturday farmers markets, the river parks, and the neighborhood traditions, are what turn a ZIP code into a home. When I show buyers the Nokomis and Venice area, a stop to walk the riverbank at a place like Snook Haven says more about daily life here than any listing photo can.

The surrounding market is worth your attention too. Venice's waterfront homes carry a real premium for Gulf access and no fixed bridges, and the quiet river-and-preserve neighborhoods give you a more attainable entry point into that lifestyle. If you have been thinking about making the move to the Gulf Coast, the fall is a perfect time to come see it: the crowds have eased, the weather is ideal, and a riverfront table at Snook Haven will be waiting.

I would love to plan a scouting trip with you, one that includes the neighborhoods, the river, and the best of what this corner of the coast holds. Send me a note or give me a call, and I will make sure you see the real Gulf Coast, not just the tour version. I will work so hard for you, and you will still be talking about me in five years.
