How to Get Involved with Special Olympics in Sarasota and Southwest Florida
One of the questions I hear from people relocating to the Gulf Coast is how to find community and give back in a way that actually matters. My answer is often Special Olympics. It is one of those organizations where a few hours of your time changes the whole week, for the athletes and for you. If you have been wondering how to get involved in Sarasota and Southwest Florida, here is what I have learned and where to start.
Why It Matters So Much
Special Olympics gives people with intellectual disabilities the chance to train, compete, and be celebrated, and it does it with joy. The athletes train year-round in sports like tennis, basketball, bocce, bowling, swimming, softball, golf, and equestrian, depending on the season, and the events themselves are genuinely moving to watch. Volunteering is not a chore here. It is one of the most energizing ways to spend an afternoon, and it is a wonderful way to meet neighbors who share your values if you are new to the area.
Start with Special Olympics Florida
The entry point for everything is Special Olympics Florida, the statewide organization that runs local county programs. Sarasota and the surrounding counties fall under the West Coast Region, and their website makes it easy to find Sarasota County-specific sign-up forms and volunteer listings. The first step is simply filling out the volunteer interest form at specialolympicsflorida.org, and the team will guide you from there.
Volunteer at an Event
If you are not ready to commit to a regular role, event-day volunteering is the perfect place to start. There are two classifications: Class A volunteers, who work directly with athletes as coaches, chaperones, mentors, or speech coaches and complete a background screening plus training, and Class B volunteers, who help on event days without direct athlete contact and have lighter requirements. Special Olympics Florida uses an online registration system where open volunteer slots are posted, and you can sign up for specific events as they come up.
In this area, the West Coast Regional Summer Games are held each spring in nearby Bradenton, and they need volunteers for everything from lunch and logistics to supporting the basketball, bocce, soccer, and tennis competitions. It is a full, joyful day, and one of the best first experiences you can have with the organization.
Become a Coach
For people who want a deeper commitment, coaching is where the connection happens. Special Olympics Florida runs a Go Coach! campaign that recruits and trains coaches for each sports season, and you do not need a background in the sport to start. The training is provided, and the reward is a relationship with athletes who will absolutely make your week. If you have any coaching or mentoring instinct at all, this is the role to consider.
Cheer at the Torch Run and Other Events
You do not have to volunteer formally to be part of it. The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, held each spring with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, brings officers running through the community carrying the Flame of Hope, and it raises money and awareness for Special Olympics. Line the route, cheer, and donate if you can. The Race for Champions 5K series and the Unified Champion Schools program are two more easy ways to participate, whether you run, walk, donate, or show up to cheer.
How I See It as a Realtor
I have spent 24 years in real estate, and the through-line of the work has always been people and community. Helping someone find a home is about more than a transaction, it is about finding their place, and giving back is part of what makes a place feel like home. If you are moving here and looking for a way to put down roots that has nothing to do with property lines, Special Olympics is a beautiful place to start.
