Thanksgiving Week on the Gulf Coast: Family Fun in Sarasota and Venice

Thanksgiving week is a wonderful time to be on the Gulf Coast: the heat has broken, the beaches are golden, and the holiday season is just beginning. Whether you live here and have family flying in, or you are visiting to explore a move, this guide covers the best family-friendly ways to spend the long weekend in Sarasota and Venice.

Beach Mornings Before the Feast

Start Thanksgiving morning the Gulf Coast way: barefoot on the sand. Siesta Key, Venice, and Nokomis beaches are all lovely in November, with softer light and fewer crowds than summer. Bring a bag for shark-tooth hunting at Venice Beach: kids could not ask for a better treasure hunt. The water is still swimmable for most, and the whole family burns off energy before the big meal.

Let Someone Else Cook

More and more families here skip the kitchen marathon and book Thanksgiving dinner at a waterfront restaurant instead. The Crow's Nest in Venice, Fins at Sharky's on Venice Beach, Pop's Sunset Grill in Nokomis, and spots around Marina Jack in Sarasota are among the places locals love for the holiday, and most take reservations well in advance. Book early: the good tables go quickly. You can enjoy the bay view and save the home cooking for leftovers later.

The Venice Holiday Parade

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, downtown Venice hosts its annual Holiday Parade, stepping off around 6:30 p.m. along Venice Avenue. With close to 100 floats, marching bands, and Santa himself, it is the classic small-town parade experience, capped with a tree lighting and caroling. Arrive early, grab a spot on the curb, and let the kids (and grandparents) soak in the lights. It is the perfect way to flip the family into holiday mode.

Gentle Outings for the Long Weekend

If you want a calm day between the turkey and the parade, the area delivers. Explore the grounds of The Ringling in Sarasota, where the bay-front setting and the Circus Museum entertain every generation. Walk the canopy walkway at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, ride the Legacy Trail on bikes or rented bikes, or paddle-shop around the mangrove tunnels at Oscar Scherer State Park near Nokomis. Mote Marine Laboratory on Lido Key is another favorite for kids, and every one of these is an easy half-day with minimal fuss.

Holiday Kickoffs Everywhere

Thanksgiving weekend is also when the holiday season switches on across the region. Venice's Mayor's Hometown Christmas brings tree lighting and choirs downtown, Siesta Key's "Light Up the Village" parade brightens Siesta Key Village, and other neighborhoods follow through December. If you are visiting to consider a move, this weekend gives you a perfect preview of the festive, family-friendly rhythm of Gulf Coast life.

If Thanksgiving week makes you think your family could thrive here year-round, let us talk. I would love to show you the neighborhoods near the schools, the trails, and the best holiday traditions: the places where a week like this becomes everyday life. Send me a note, and let us plan your visit.
