Venice Turns 100: How the City on the Gulf Is Celebrating Its Centennial
Venice, Florida, incorporated on July 1, 1926, is marking its centennial with an 18-month celebration that runs through spring 2027 under the theme "100 Years of Your City on the Gulf." From a dedicated museum exhibit to a 50th-anniversary holiday parade, the city is pulling out all the stops this season. If you are considering a move to Venice, or simply love a good hometown celebration, here is what is happening and why this is a wonderful year to visit.
A Century of City on the Gulf
Venice is one of the few fully planned cities in Florida, designed in the 1920s around a Mediterranean Revival style that still defines its historic downtown. Its broad avenues, arcaded storefronts, and iconic city hall were part of a vision that has aged remarkably well, and today the downtown is a walkable, bikeable district unlike anything else on the Gulf Coast. The centennial kicked off in late November 2025 and runs through May 2027, with the official anniversary date of July 1, 2026 already behind us.
The Venice Turns 100 Exhibit
At the heart of the celebration is "Venice Turns 100: Celebrating the City on the Gulf's Centennial," a special exhibit at the Venice Museum at 351 Nassau Street South, on display daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through January 2027. It gathers photographs, artifacts, and stories from the city's first century, and it is an excellent way to understand how Venice grew from a planned resort town into the vibrant coastal community it is today. For buyers considering the area, it is also a crash course in what makes the downtown so special.
What's Coming This Season
The centennial season is packed with community events. Sun Fiesta, the longtime family festival in Centennial Park, ran October 16-18, and the Witches Walk downtown Halloween stroll returns October 23. In November, the Living Arts Festival brings performances across Sarasota and Venice from November 8-15. Then comes the centerpiece of the season: the 50th annual City of Venice Holiday Parade on Saturday, November 28, at 6:30 p.m. through historic downtown. The parade theme celebrates the parade's own 50th anniversary, the city's centennial, and America's 250th birthday, with the beloved vintage fire engine "Old Betsy" serving as grand marshal. The Mayor's Hometown Christmas tree lighting at Centennial Park follows on Friday, November 27.
The centennial program continues well into 2027, so even if you cannot make it this season, there will be more to celebrate through spring.
Why This Matters if You're House Hunting
A centennial is more than a party; it is proof that a community has staying power. When I show buyers Venice, I point to the downtown festivals, the monthly wine walk, the farmers market, and now the centennial as evidence of the life you are actually moving into. Venice offers a rare combination: a planned, walkable downtown, waterfront homes with Gulf access and no fixed bridges, and a genuine small-town community that gathers for its own history. Homes in the historic district and on Venice Island carry real premiums, and the waterfront market has held steady through the fall.
If you have been thinking about making the Gulf Coast home, there has never been a better season to see Venice. The crowds of high season have not yet arrived, the weather is ideal, and the whole city is dressed up to show off. I would love to plan a visit with you, one that takes in the centennial exhibit, the downtown, and the waterfront neighborhoods that make this city so special. Send me a note or give me a call, and I will make sure you see the best of Venice in its 100th year. I will work so hard for you, and you will still be talking about me in five years.
