Where Julie Takes Out-of-Town Guests: A Gulf Coast Dining Guide
When buyers come to look at homes, they are also sampling a life, and dinner is where that life is easiest to taste. Over years of hosting out-of-town guests, from visiting buyers to my own family, I have settled on a short list of tables that reliably show the Gulf Coast at its best: water in view, food worth the trip, and a room that feels like this place and nowhere else. Here is where I take the people I want to impress.
Downtown Sarasota: Dress-Up Dinner on the Bay
For a first night in town, I start with Marina Jack, the bayfront institution at 2 Marina Plaza. The dining room sits right over Sarasota Bay, so every table gets the sunset and the boats coming home to the marina. It is polished without being stuffy, and the walk afterward along Bayfront Park is the perfect preview of downtown living. When the occasion is bigger, I book Ocean Prime at the Quay, where the dry-aged steaks, the seafood, and the skyline views at twilight make a genuine impression on anyone wondering whether Sarasota can hold its own. It can.
Siesta Key: Relaxed Island Evenings
The island deserves its own night. On Siesta Key, Siesta Key Summer House Steak and Seafood at 149 Avenida Messina is my go-to for a special meal without leaving the island: creative seafood, a serious steak program, and an elegant room that still feels like vacation. For a livelier, more barefoot evening, Siesta Key Oyster Bar on Ocean Boulevard is the village's favorite for raw bar classics, cold drinks, and people watching, and it has been doing it for decades. I tell visitors to try both, in either order, and let the island dictate the pace.
Longboat Key and the North End: Water Views That Win
Farther north, Longboat Key delivers some of the prettiest water views on the Gulf. Dry Dock Waterfront Grill at 412 Gulf of Mexico Drive has been a Longboat favorite for years, with a raw bar, fresh fish, and a deck that looks straight out onto the water. It is relaxed enough for a post-beach evening and polished enough for a celebration. If you want the classic Longboat experience, the Chart House brings the region's signature sunset show, with the dining room built right over the water.
Venice and Nokomis: Where South County Shines
When buyers are focusing on South County, I close the day at The Crow's Nest at 1968 Tarpon Center Drive, perched above the Venice marina. The lobster bisque is legendary, the fresh catch changes daily, and the working marina below is pure Venice charm. A few minutes away at Venice Beach, Fins at Sharky's offers open-air Gulf views steps from the sand, and Sharky's on the Pier next door is the laid-back choice for watching the sunset with your feet in the sand. One of my favorite quieter tables in all of South County is Pop's Sunset Grill on Circuit Road in Nokomis, where the grouper sandwich and key lime pie are worth planning a whole evening around.
My Golden Rule for Visitor Dinners
I plan any sunset reservation about a week ahead in season, and I tell guests to eat the fish that is local and the dishes that are house-made, because that is where this region shows off. Beyond that, the best advice I have is to let the view do its job. Hand a guest a drink at sunset, point them at the water, and let the Gulf Coast make its own case. It almost always closes the sale.
Let's Plan Your Visit
If you are planning a house-hunting trip, tell me how many nights you have and I will build a whole itinerary around it, including the right tables for each neighborhood we tour. It is one of my favorite parts of the job, and it is how you will know whether this is the life you want. Send me a note, and warmly, Julie.
