A Winter Weekend on the Gulf Coast: Julie's Itinerary for Sarasota and Venice
Winter weekends are when the Gulf Coast shows its best side: the beaches have room to breathe, the sunsets come early and stay colorful, and the whole region dresses up for the holidays. I have put together my go-to winter weekend in Sarasota and Venice, the same one I give to out-of-state buyers who fly down for a look. It hits the classics without feeling touristy, and it gets you into the neighborhoods, the markets, and the wild places that make this stretch of coast feel like home within forty-eight hours.
Friday Evening: Arrive, Walk, and Settle In
Land in the afternoon, check in, and let the first evening be slow. If you are staying in Sarasota, park once and walk: dinner at Marina Jack on the bayfront or one of the favorites along Main Street, then a stroll down to Bayfront Park while the holiday lights reflect on the water. If you are staying in Venice, the Mediterranean Revival downtown is at its most charming at night, with decorated trees along Miami and West Venice Avenues and the lights of the Intracoastal just a few blocks away. The Crow's Nest above the Venice Marina is a classic first-night table, and the sunset from the deck is a welcome like no other. This is also the night to walk a neighborhood or two on foot: downtown Sarasota, Lido Key, or historic Venice all give you a feel for the lifestyle in one short evening.
Saturday Morning: Farmers Market and a Beach Walk
Start Saturday the way residents do: at the market. The Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market lines Lemon Avenue and Main Street from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., a city tradition since 1979, with coffee, fresh fruit, and enough local vendors to do a little holiday shopping while you stroll. In Venice, the market sets up from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. beside City Hall on West Venice Avenue, smaller and just as welcoming. From either market, the morning belongs to the sand: a walk on Siesta Key's quartz beach in the low winter light, or a shark tooth hunt at low tide on Caspersen Beach in Venice with a mesh bag in hand. The winter light on the beach, low and golden, is worth the trip on its own.
Saturday Afternoon: Gardens, Art, and a Sunset Dock
After lunch, choose your afternoon: art lovers head to The Ringling, where the grounds alone are worth the visit and the holiday season brings Holiday Splendor, an evening of music and art making in the Museum of Art courtyard that has been free with a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots. Garden lovers should not miss Marie Selby Botanical Gardens on the bayfront, and in December, its famous Lights in Bloom turns fifteen acres into a display of more than two million lights. As the afternoon fades, claim a spot on a seawall or dock for sunset: Bayfront Park in Sarasota, the Venice jetties, or the Nokomis jetty for the Saturday evening drum circle, smaller and more local in winter. However you spend the day, the sunset is the main event.
Sunday Morning: Manatees and the Real Florida
Before you head home, give yourself the morning that only winter can offer: manatee watching. Warm Mineral Springs in North Port, about fifteen minutes from Venice, is Florida's only naturally warm spring, with water sitting around 85 to 87 degrees year-round, and in winter more than 125 manatees gather at the refuge it creates. The creek is a no-entry zone through mid-March so the animals can rest, which makes the shore viewing at Warm Mineral Springs Park, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., such a reliable experience. If the family wants one more adventure, the Legacy Trail offers a flat, palm-lined ride between Sarasota and Venice, and Historic Spanish Point in Osprey is a quiet place to walk through shell mounds and bayfront gardens before the drive out. Either way, you leave with the feeling that you have seen the real Florida, not just the postcards.
The December Bonus
If your weekend lands in the holiday season, fold in one of the region's signature events: the Venice Christmas Boat Parade on the first Saturday of December, the Sarasota Holiday Boat Parade of Lights mid-month, or a night at Lights in Bloom. I have a full guide to the December 2026 events in Sarasota and Venice, so you can pick the evenings that fit your weekend best.
Come See It for Yourself
A winter weekend is the truest preview of Gulf Coast life: the pace, the light, the markets, the manatees, and the way the community gathers when the season arrives. If that sounds like the life you want, let me plan your next visit with neighborhoods and homes that match it. Send me a note or give me a call, and I will make sure your time here counts, whether you are buying or just beginning to dream about it. Thanks so much, and I hope to see you on the coast this winter.
